A collaboration between soca king Machel Montano and the legendary zouk band Kassav is a possibility.

Jacob Desvarieux, one of the co-founders of the band, revealed that they have been talking about a collaboration for some time and with the band’s 40th anniversary looming, there is a chance it might happen.

Desvarieux was talking to Loop at the Dominica World Creole Festival where the band performed.

Montano was in the audience taking in Kassav’s performance and afterwards went backstage to greet them.

Kassav, a Guadeloupean band, are the founders of Zouk music, considered today the music of Martinique and Guadeloupe.

Desvarieux, a heavy metal rock guitarist living in Paris, founded the band with musicians George and Pierre-Eduard Decimus of the kadans fusion band, the Vikings of Guadeloupe.

The group used the influence of well-known Dominican, Haitian and Guadeloupean bands to create a Guadeloupean carnival sound known as Zouk.

In 1980, the band, whose name is French for Cassava, launched its first album Love and Ka Dance and toured widely through Paris.

However, it was on their second album, Yélélé, in 1985, that the band scored an international hit with Zouk la sé sèl médikaman nou ni which meant Zouk is the only medicine we have.

Fifty-six albums later, Kassav still endures.

Jocelyne Béroard, one of the lead singers of the band, said love for what they do is what has kept them together.

In 2019, the band will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a concert in Paris.
