Two experienced Carnival stakeholders have stepped forward to offer support in exploring new opportunities to showcase the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival 2021 product to the world.

This comes one month after Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley noted that the annual festival would be shelved for 2021 during a National Budget panel discussion on September 28.

Noting the massive socio-cultural, traditional, logistical and economic implications of this decision on the public and private landscapes of the Carnival sector, Jules Sobion - founder of the award-winning CAESAR’S ARMY - and Rubadiri Victor - President of the Artists’ Coalition of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT) – have collectively pledged their support towards a committed partnership that unites the Carnival community to present an essential, packaged, quality product for national, regional and global consumption.

Echoing the sentiments of several industry professions across sub-sectors such as music, mas, steelpan and traditional arts, both Victor and Sobion believe that a synergistic cultural production is key to the continued progress of the Carnival experience, particularly during a virtual era of worldwide digital transformation.

Victor who is also the J’Ouvert Bandleader for Generation Lion said: “We are now at a critical point that requires all hands on deck Together in Carnival. The best talent in the industry needs to be brought together to be a part of this. We have a duty to show the world that Trinidad and Tobago is the Mecca of Carnival.”

He also explained that the absence of a physical Carnival creates a unique opportunity to meaningfully employ technology to Trinidad and Tobago’s advantage.

“The pandemic may have caused a loss of 55,000 Carnival tourists to the island, but we have the prospect of engaging 55 million pairs of eyes for the benefit of our heritage and culture.”

Furthermore, Victor noted that the void left behind with no Trinidad Carnival can have far-reaching, devastating consequences for future generations.

“We have three months to get our act in order, and we are a resourceful, resilient people.”

Jules Sobion, who doubles as the bandleader for ROGUE Carnival, is ready to serve for the greater good of Brand T&T and T&T Carnival.

“As an industry filled with progressive thinkers, this is an excellent opportunity to convert these ideas into viable solutions for the visibility of Trinidad and Tobago Carnival on the world stage. We look forward to joining with the Government and the private sector during this exciting transitional period.”

He stressed the importance of a team effort to combine the skills and resources from the private and public sector.

“If the revolution of Carnival has to be televised, then we must ensure to fulfil this to the best of our ability. Let us work Together in Carnival alongside all of our experts at all levels and answer the call to fulfil this mission and to amplify the voice of Carnival in how it is represented to the world.”

Sobion also noted that while the task at hand is formidable, the co-operative approach is a necessary step to holistically and authentically representing the dynamism of T&T’s Carnival.

The team is inviting Carnival stakeholders from across the country and in the diaspora to join forces to activate ideas, curate experiences and collate content towards re-imagining the Trinidad Carnival experience.
