Marley Mervin James performs under the stage name Mongstar. Named after the late, great Jamaican reggae icon Bob Marley, Mongstar was born into a musical family that includes his father Ras Bonte and his uncles Ras Africa and Prosper.
Mongstar spent much of his childhood surrounded by musicians and artistes who recorded music at a home studio then owned by his father. These experiences would later influence him when he decided to pursue a career in music.
While he first experimented with dancehall, it would be soca music where he would find his voice when in 2010 he entered and won the first ever Piton Soca Starz competition organized by the Piton Brand of the Windward and Leeward Brewery. Mongstar would win the tide with his original song "Corn" (2010)
which along with stirring up controversy because if its lyrics would also come second in that year's race to the Road March title.
In 2011, Mongstar was signed to Saint Lucian music label Stratosphere Muzic where he worked exclusively with songwriter and producer Courtney "Curty"
Louis. Together the two would release a string of hits including "Glo KoKo"(2011), "Saint Lucia We Love" (2012) and "Nationality” (2013).
In 2013, Mongstar travelled to Martinique where he competed in the inaugural All 4 One Caribbean competition against 8 either countries including Trinidad, Barbados, Haiti, Dominican Republic and Dominica. Performing "Glo KoKo" and "Saint Lucia We Love”, Mongstar would walk away with the tide.
Mongstar is also the first ever wanner of the Soca Switch competition organized by the Just 4 Fun Carnival Band in April 2015. He won the competition with his "We Getting On" produced by Aimran Simmons of Studio No XCitement.
Mongstar has toured throughout the world including Texas, New York, Canada, London, St Croix and the French Caribbean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique where he is tremendously popular.
In 2014, Mongstar terminated his partnership with Stratosphere Muzic. Since then, he has worked with a number of other producers including Francis "Leebo" De Lima with whom he released "Lanmou” in November 2014 and Martinique blueprint Jolie Rouge Sound, releasing "Leve Fese" in December 2014.
In 2015, Mongstar released "Your Vibes" on the Sunshine Riddim produced by Augustino Mensah of Ghana and Daesean Germaine of Dominant Muzik in Saint Lucia. He also released "Revellers Song" and "We Getting On-HYPER MIX" which were produced by Aimran Simmons of Studio No Xcitement Mongstar opened his 2016 season by going back to his roots, releasing "Straight Outta St Lucia" days ahead of Saint Lucia's 37th Independence anniversary. The song which was written by him and producer Aimran Simmons who also mixed the track was mastered in the UK by Kearon Da Bo$$ Stephen of LMP Int. He is also featured on "Still I Rise" with Jay Budz, a song that was produced and mixed by Desmond "Ransum" Auguste and Mastered by Canadian based Johann "Yogi" Deterville.
Mongstar is a member of the NG Upsurge Tent His personal catalogue has over 30 songs and includes collaborations with Saint Lucian artistes Ambi ["Ma Mala/' (2011), "Merry Go Round" (2013)] as well as Ricky T ["Junkie Bacchanal (2013), "40 Days 40 Nights Remix" (2013)] in addition to Superman HD "Sexy Girl" (2012). He has also written for a number of artistes including Ilah Man, Marie-Anne, Sergie and Ricky T. His 2011 hit "Glo KoKo" is also featured on French compilation Don's Collector Volume 4.
